Quilt History Questions and Answers Last Months question: Answer: Answer In his book The American Quilt A History of Cloth and Comfort 1750-1950, Roderick Kiracofe states that block printing is the oldest method of applying design to fabric (pp. 16-17). A design is cut into a block of wood or clay and then is leaded with dye from a felt pad or roller and pressed onto a fabric. Eighteen- inch width was the most common size that could be handled easily, although other sizes have been seen in fabrics. Registration pins were often inserted to help the patterns match and can be seen in the print. |
